Which Starlink should you get?

Answer five questions, one screen at a time, and the chooser names one plan and one dish for your home or your trips, adds up a dated first-year cost, and says “wait” when Starlink isn’t the right buy yet.

  • Plan prices dated, read off the US order list on starlink.com
  • Answers “wait” when fiber, a seasonal home or a short need makes Starlink a poor buy
  • No address, no email, no sign-up

Six plans, two families

Which Starlink plan fits your household?

Most US homes of three or four people fit Residential 200 Mbps, which starlink.com’s nationwide list put at $76.50/mo on Nov 4, 2026. One or two light users can take Residential 100 Mbps ($49.50/mo) where it is sold, and homes with five or more heavy users fit Max ($143/mo). Travelers start on Roam 100GB at $55/mo. Home prices differ from one address to the next, and the order page reveals yours after you type it.

Dishes

Standard, V5 or Mini: which dish should you get?

For a house, get the Standard dish or the newer V5; for travel, get the Mini. The Nov 4, 2026 kit prices on starlink.com put the Standard and the V5 at $349 each to buy (or as a rental, depending on the address) and the Mini at $149. The V5 is smaller and averages 35–50 W average, but it is sold in select areas only, so your address often picks between it and the Standard.

Reasons to hold off

When should you hold off on Starlink?

Hold off if fiber or cable already works at your address or is due within about a year, if the dish is for a seasonal home, or if you need internet for one trip, event or storm season. In those cases a kit plus monthly service rarely pays off at the Nov 4, 2026 list prices. The chooser answers “wait” for each of these, and that result carries no order button.

How the chooser picks a planHome answers lead to Residential 100 Mbps, 200 Mbps or Max depending on how many people and heavy uses. Travel answers lead to Roam 100GB, 300GB or Unlimited. For first-time customers

Chose your plan? How the $100 referral credit works

Never had Starlink? Start your starlink.com order from a current customer’s referral link and Starlink gives you $100 in account credit, which the referral terms tie to invoice number two (its help center says it can appear around day 60 after activation). Nothing gets typed in and nothing comes off the checkout total: the kit and first month are charged as usual.

Codes posted online change nothing at checkout: the order-page script we read on Oct 21, 2026 had no field to type one into. The link itself carries the referral, and the order page confirms it as “Referral Code Applied”. Whoever runs this site earns the same $100 when you use our link, which is why a disclosure sits beside every button here.

  2. Checkout“Referral Code Applied” showsCheck it before paying

  4. ~2 monthsTwo paid billing cyclesResidential or Roam, not Standby
  5. Invoice 2$100 account creditCash instead, if your Referrals tab offers it
Starlink’s referral terms tie the credit to invoice number two of your subscription; the help center puts it at roughly 60 days after activation. It never lowers the checkout total, and SpaceX rules on every referral.

It counts when…

  • You’ve never had a Starlink account.
  • The dish will serve an address in a US state or Washington, DC (territories unconfirmed).
  • The order is placed on starlink.com, starting from the link, and paid in the tab it opened.
  • It’s a Residential or Roam order for yourself, not a business. Rented kits are unconfirmed.
  • The plan runs two complete billing cycles at full speed (Standby months don’t count).

It’s lost when…

  • The kit comes from a store or marketplace rather than starlink.com.
  • You had a Starlink account before, or the order is for a business.
  • You come back later in a fresh tab. The starlink.com script we looked at on Oct 21, 2026 kept the referral only in whichever tab the link started; Starlink publishes no such rule, so pay there to be safe. A missed referral can’t be attached after the order.
  • Starlink rules out your rented kit: its terms speak of buying a kit and say nothing about rentals.

Four checks at checkout

  1. Settle on a plan first; the chooser at the top takes a minute.
  2. Open starlink.com from a referral button and stay in that tab.
  3. Type your service address and select the plan.
  4. Confirm the page reads “Referral Code Applied”, then pay.

The final say on every referral is SpaceX’s. It can change the program with 30 days’ notice, and rewards may be taxable. Read Starlink’s Referral Program Terms (the Oct 7, 2026 version, still current on Nov 4, 2026).

For first-timers

How does Starlink reach your house?

Starlink is internet relayed by thousands of satellites in low orbit. The dish at your home talks to whichever satellite is overhead, so no cable or phone line has to reach the house.

  • The dish aims itself. It steers its beam electronically and wants open sky overhead; trees or a roofline in the way cause dropouts.
  • A Wi-Fi router comes in the box. Starlink rates Router 3 for 3,200 sq ft and Router Mini for 2,200 sq ft.
  • Latency is on the map, not the plan. Starlink publishes it on its coverage map rather than per plan, and says remote places such as Alaska see higher latency.

Before you choose

What do buyers check before picking a plan?

Each answer is checked against Starlink’s own pages. More in plan and kit questions.

Which plan do most households end up with?

Homes of three or four people who stream, game or take daily calls usually fit Residential 200 Mbps. One or two light users can take Residential 100 Mbps where Starlink sells it, and a house with five or more heavy users at once fits Max. The three home tiers compared.

What do the six plans cost each month?

Starlink’s nationwide list on Nov 4, 2026 read $49.50/mo for the 100 Mbps home tier, $76.50/mo for 200 Mbps and $143/mo for Max. Each address can land on a different home price, which starlink.com reveals after the address is entered. Roam is the same nationwide: $55/mo, $80/mo and $175/mo. All six side by side.

Will my home kit be rented or bought?

Starlink decides by address. Some addresses get a rental with a one-off activation charge ($0, $99 or $199); others buy the dish for $349. A rental can’t be paused and has to be returned within 30 days of cancelling. Compare the first year either way.

Should a house get the Mini instead of a full-size dish?

Usually not. Starlink describes the Mini as “for basic internet use”, and its built-in Wi-Fi is rated for about 1,200 sq ft. For a house, the Standard dish or the V5 fits better; the Mini earns its place on trips, where its 25–40 W draw matters. V5 vs Mini.
